Boris - New Album (2011)

From last.fm:

"Boris is a Japanese musical group formed in 1992 in Tokyo. As of 2010, their lineup consists of: Atsuo - Drums, Vocals; Takeshi - Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Vocals; Wata - Lead Guitar, Vocals.Michio Kurihara - Live session guitarist.Boris are as prolific as they are experimental. They are known to regularly switch musical genres between albums, drawing from a wildly diverse variety of musical styles including psychedelic rock, punk, sludge, doom metal, drone, pop, noise, shoegaze, ambient, and more. The band’s name is taken from a song on Melvins’ album Bullhead."

I've said it now and I'll say it again, FUCKING BORIS WHY DO YOU FUCK WITH OUR MINDS LIKE THIS? AHHHHH FUCK! Seriously though, if you're not familiar with this band Boris you need to gtfo my blog. Just kidding. But if you seriously aren't, Boris are pretty much T H E definitive experimental band. Their past albums have ranged from sludge to drone to psychedelic rock to traditional classic rock-esque to shoegaze to everything in the between. This album is no exception to where their experimentation takes them. Taking a turn in a completely different spin, Boris seems to incorporate lots of j-rock, psychedelic rock, and pop into this album. I'm usually not one to listen to this certain of music but man, is this fucking cool or what. It's not just j-rock. It's not just psychedelic rock. It's not just pop- It goes above and beyond what the norm actually and delivers that signature sound. What I've noticed about this album is that there's a lot of emphasis on synthesizer. I'm don't really mind synths in my music too much. If I had a choice, I'd probably want them out but I think they're a great addition to this album. My vocabulary isn't big enough to fully go into detail to so I'll stop rambling and just advise you to pick this up and listen to it for yourself. Typical Boris fans will probably enjoy this album, fans of psychedelic rock who don't mind a bit of electronic sounds in their music, and generally fans of j-rock because damn, do half of these songs sound like an opener for anime or what. Just pick this up!

  1. Haha. I think it's better than Vein to be honest. I like it despite the fact it's very electronic-influenced and I really dislike electronic music.

  6. I don't like this one yet a lot, but I will, always the same effect with Boris albums, except for the split with sunn ( the split that reveals them to me, like for many people I think ^^)

for sure it wasn't what I expected from them ! very pop, and not (and I'm happy of this) too j-rock orientated, just a little bit that suits rather well to their music.

  7. Dissapointed. I understand they're insane and they experiment, but this seems like a joke to me. Well, I go back to masterpieces like HEAVY ROCKS, FLOOD and PINK...waiting for the new works by them in May.
